IRON SOLDIER playing tips, VERSION 1.4: Revised January 3rd, 1995
I've tried to refrain from any "give it away" type clues, so you
can read this and still be pleasantly (or unpleasantly) surprised
while playing. Of course, there are things in here that are not
in the manual, so read it at your own risk.
1. The Bust: pretty simple really, so why not have some fun! Leave
the last building standing in the warehouse complex and go back to
the city to do some "buildin' bustin'"! After you've leveled the
city, stomp that last building.
2. Care Package: one of the more difficult levels because of it's
early position in the game. The trick to hitting ships is to lob
those grenades from the front or back -- this gives you a longer
target. If you can't manage that, lob one and watch it carefully,
then start walking SLOWLY forwards or backwards until you get a
hit, then quickly lob another one! This level should be completed
quickly or the ships will offload enemy I.S. units that will make
your life more difficult! If an I.S. gets loose, you will have to
destroy it as well to win. See level-5 for more on I.S. battles.
If you want to have some fun, try this level again after you have
the Cruise Missiles. It's great, just fire 'em from where you're
standing and fly 'em to the ships! Boom! Game over... you win
without even taking a step!
3. London Bridge: a very simple level -- if you know what to hit! Aim
at the main support struts, not the bridge itself! Oh, and there
are TWO bridges to bust. Too bad you can't walk across the bridge
and stomp all the buildings on the island first.
This is another one that can be finished with Cruise Missiles
without taking a step.
4. Midnight Raid: just a blast-fest, really. The mission is complete
when you grab the "new weapon" in the center, so if you want to do
some stompin', leave that until you're through.
5. Hunt The Hunter: another difficult level. Ouch, those Rockets HURT!
If you can't drop him with Grenades, move in CLOSE! He'll stop
firing Rockets when you get "up close and personal", but he'll
punch your lights out of you stay too long. The trick is, step in,
punch, step out, repeat! Use the "new weapon" from the last
mission for better results. You are at a decided disadvantage when
fighting other Iron Soldiers, so be careful! They do a lot more
damage to you than you do to them. I don't know why, but they did
say that your unit was an "early production" model, so the others
must be the "new and improved" models?
6. Walk In The Park: one of my favorites! Just a big shooting gallery!
Another "out of place" level, only this one's too easy! Practice
your long-range targeting skills here while the threat is relatively
low, you'll need them in later missions! If you hang around long
enough you'll get your first glimpse of the Gantlet Attack Plane.
7. Fox And Hound: pretty simple, really. The biggest challenge is
FINDING the trucks. Not much strategy here, just shoot 'em or
stomp 'em, then pick up the new weapon.
HINTS ON FINDING THE TRUCKS--DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!
Look to your left, you should see the first truck crossing your
path in the distance. After you get that one, look around for a
lot with a bunch of warehouses and fuel tanks. Wander around in
there for a minute and the second truck will appear. And finally,
head across the park toward the rows of white apartment buildings.
Go to the far corner and blast a few buildings, you should find the
last truck. Blast it and grab the box.
8. Pearl Harbor: a very difficult level! Just too many ships and not
enough time or ammo. Work fast! Try for the ships moving out
first, but don't waste Grenades! If they're out of range, fire
your Rockets. Then, as you're looking for more, Grenade the ships
that are still in port. If you run out of Rockets with one ship
left, try that other "new weapon" you've recently acquired. It's
not as powerful, but it's got LONG range. The biggest problem
with this level is the confusing shape of the land. Don't get
caught on the wrong side of a harbor while your ship sails away!
9. Pandora's Box: another personal favorite, and really pretty easy,
if you know the trick. According to legend, Pandora released
unspeakable evil upon the lands when she opened the box. So the
trick is, DON'T OPEN THE BOX! Use Rockets to take out the towers,
then lob a pile of Grenades over the wall to blast the crap out of
everything inside! Good place to practice the "advanced moves"
option. Circle the building lobbing Grenades at various places and
distances to blanket the interior, then reload and do it again! If
you do it right, there will be nothing left inside except your new
"toy". Oh, and as for that Tasset Heavy Tank that dogs you while
trying to re-load, just lead it into the fuel dump and blow the
whole place to he... uh... heck!
10.Hornet's Nest: another shooting gallery. Have fun! (If you can't
finish this level without help, go back to your Ninetendo!) *8^)
11.One-Man Army: and yet another shooting gallery! I'd guess they
mixed hard and easy levels like this to give us all a break.
You know, a "nasty" or two, then a "cake" level for a little R&R.
12.The Best Defense: a definite "nasty"! The helicopters and tanks
aren't as big a threat as you think. Watch your "six"! There are
two main targets you need to destroy to complete the game... but
don't leave your post for too long, the helicopters CAN destroy the
building if given a chance! Hint: the helicopters that come in
from the right concentrate on the building, the ones on the left
shoot at YOU! My load of choice for this level: Gatling Gun and
three Rocket Launchers.
13.Urban Renewal: another nasty! Aim carefully and don't waste ammo!
There are a lot of buildings to bust and not a lot of ammo around.
There is an endless supply of Gantlet Attack Planes and Greave
V.T.O.L. bombers to burn up your precious ammo, so WORK FAST! Try
to make the bombers work for you -- put a lot of buildings between
you and them and they will do your dirty work! Oh, and save some
rockets for the islands! Huh? Look around... Hints: Belly-shoot
the Attack Planes with the Gatling Gun, or use the Rail Cannon to
frag 'em at long range. Also, lead the enemy I.S. into the fuel
dump then blast the tanks as he passes through! And finally, it's
best to clear the islands FIRST! Cruise Missiles are fun to play
with on this level, but you've got a better chance of success with
Rockets. You can level 6 to 12 buildings with a Rocket Launcher,
but a Cruise Missile will frag maybe 4, if you aim carefully AND
get lucky. My load of choice for this level is, Gatling Gun, Rail
Cannon and two Rocket Launchers.
14.Escort Service: and yet another nasty! Don't try and save all the
trucks. Pick a favorite and KEEP IT IN SIGHT! Oh, and don't step
on it either! *8^) You don't need to save them all. If even ONE
truck makes it, your mission is a success! My load of choice for
this level is the same as for Urban Renewal. Use Rockets to clear
your field of fire and make "short cuts" to stay with the truck.
15.Return To Sender: not as difficult as "Pearl Harbor" because you
are better armed here, and the layout of the land is easier to
negotiate. Use Cruise Missiles, Rockets or Grenades to blast 'em,
and watch out for that "Tasset" Tank! Cruise Missiles are fun
here. I really think "Pearl Harbor" and this level should have
been swapped. Pearl is more difficult, and Cruise Missiles would
have been much more useful there. My load of choice: Gatling Gun,
Rocket Launcher and two Cruise Missiles.
16.War Is Heck: it sure is! Actually, I was kind of disappointed in
how easy this level was. Maybe it just seemed that way because I
had developed my fighting skills on the way here. Oh well, just
bust those buildings, but leave the Iron Fist Command Center for
last (it's the pointy blue one). Why? Heh, heh... do the initials
"I.S." mean anything to you? How about "BFIS"! (Doom humor...)
This level is very time consuming, typically taking 40 minutes to
an hour to complete, so don't try it if it's late and you have to
work tomorrow! Hint: I usually level everything but the Iron Fist
Command Center, then load up on whatever goodies remain and use the
Parker Chain Cutter to cut it down. My load of choice is again a
Gatling Gun, Rail Cannon and two Rocket Launchers. Actually I seem
to be able to finish this level with just about any reasonable
combination of weapons, but if you want to see how good a marksman
you are, try it with just the Rail Cannon and 3 Rocket Launchers.
17.Secret Level: Huh? Just kidding... but now that I've got your
attention (don't you hate it when people do that!) I'll give you a
little friendly playing advice.
The most important thing to remember is your mission goal. I know
this sounds obvious, but it's so much fun blasting helicopters and
stomping tanks it's easy to get distracted. There is only so much
ammo and energy available on each level, and if you waste too much
time you will run out before you finish. My strategy is to first
do what is required, except for one last thing (leave one building,
one tank, don't pick up the new weapon, etc.) and then blast and
stomp until supplies run out.
If you pick up something when you don't need it, like a "Repair"
when you're not damaged, you waste it. Don't grab it 'til you need
it! This is VERY important on later levels. The exception to this
would be "Supplies" and "New Weapons" which are mission goals.
If you can't seem to get past a level, go on the the next, you
might find something there that'll help. This, of course, won't
work if the level you're stuck on is the last one in a group...
The Slate Heavy Shield is pretty useless. Practice your marksmanship
and you won't need it. After all, they can't get you, if they can't
get TO you! I suppose it might be useful for taking on enemy I.S.
units, but "Advanced Moves" works better. Just circle and shoot.
The Charlotte Rail Cannon is a particularly good long range weapon.
I can blast things that are little more than dots on the horizon
with this baby. I love it! Don't leave home without it!
Badger Hand Grenades give you the most fire power, if you can get
the hang of AIMING them! I never did...
The Sable Cruise Missile is a piece of junk! I mean, if you could
carry a bunch of them they'd be great. But given their limited
stopping power (TWO won't stop an enemy I.S.!), they just use up
too much space that could be used for other weapons. A Rocket
Launcher will level a lot more real estate. (It's fun to go back
to earlier levels with Cruise Missiles, though.) About the only
thing Cruise Missiles are really good for are bridges and ships.
For fun try shooting down Gantlet Attack Planes with Cruise Missiles.
(It can be done, but there's a trick to it...) Or just follow an
Attack Plane that's about to make a bombing run on you so you can get
a "bird's eye" view of your demise. Better yet, try shooting
YOURSELF! It's funny that TWO won't stop an enemy I.S., but ONE will
blow you to smitherenes?
Here's a couple of tricks. Pause the game, then use "1" or "3" to
do single-frame, slow motion advance. Also, press "8" during play
to call up a status screen.
How come enemy I.S. units can walk across water!?! Watch the one
in "Urban Renewal", it sometimes walks across the lagoon in the
center to get to you. Must be the new amphibious model? Or maybe
Iron Fist developed IS-Water-Wings?
